Plasma Repair Answers

The  basic  idea  of plasma display is to illuminate a colored  gas substance to form an  image.  What  you see on the screen is  burning  gas  between   two  pieces of glass. The  gas substance is called neon or xeon.   Average  estimates  for  the screen  to last  is  40,000 to 60,000  hours.  The  plasma  screen   (PDP)   contains a complex  structure  which  has millions and  millions of colored pixels. Each   pixel  is  powered     by  tiny  electrodes  and  has its  own gas  and color .

Plasma TV problems

Usually plasma TV problems start with the screen. If   the plasma screen is broken or crashed, it's  not  repairable any  more . It   needs a  new  plasma  screen  replacement,  which may cost you  more  then the plasma TV  itself. ( new screen run ..2 -3k in real  life .)   Budget   management  !!!   Protection  front  screen   (glass on  front) can  be  easily replaced and not so  expensive as  PDP  panel  behind it. If  you have just  protection  screen   damage  your screen(PDP   panel) will  work   without  any  problem  . Plasma  screen   contains   -  aluminum  base and   two pieces  of  glass  with  gas   between  them  (  gas  inside   not  rechargeable ).  Pixels  with  gas  , controlled  by  small  electrodes .  Each pixel  contains  3  colored   sub pixels  : they  are   green,  blue  and   red.  Plasma  screen  works  in   2  steps:
---          gas  ignition
---          picture  development
IGNITION     -     power  supply >logic  control >  Z  or   X  sustain,> screen
PICTURE  DEVELOPMENT       -      power  supply>,video  control  board  or  scaler  > ,logic  control   board>y  sustain > x  sustain > buffer boards  >screen

Common   problems  with  plasma    panels   -   electrodes  damage    inside,  change  gas    parameters,    drivers  on  ribbon  connectors   damage.

90%  SCREEN  PROBLEMS    NOT  REPAIRABLE
10%  ON  PANELS  42V6  AND  42V5 (YOU  HAVE  CHANCE)

Burn-in image:

This is an Image you can see on top of  the normal picture. It's  usually  displayed as dark lines or a dark area on the  screen.  Burn-in image  developers: TV in-service in  airports,  libraries, restaurants,  hotels, security  networks,  bars,  all  public  places. If your plasma  TV  displays  an  image  that's  not  moving (static image)  for a  long  time,  it  will  develop  burn-in  spots.  This  issue  is not  repairable  and  you  will  need a  new  screen  (PDP panel)  . That's  why  for all  those  restaurants,  bars,  and public places, it's better if  you  use an LCD    type TV, not a  plasma. For  example, a  Panasonic  plasma  TV   was in  a King   County  bar  for   6 months on  a  sport  channel and   it  developed a  burn-in   sport  channel   image.   The  estimated cost  for  this  type  of problem  would  be  $2,500.00.  Be smart  and  save  your  money !!!!

Vertical or horizontal lines or bars - 2-3" wide:

There is 60% of chance you will need a new screen. The problem  you  may  have  is dead  driver  (part of a screen) or  poor connection  between plasma glass and ribbon  wire connector.  There is some solution for it but not for long  time. PDP panel  and  address driver on  it  not separated. If  one  of  26-40  drivers  is  going out,  you need  new screen. It is a  real  question   why   manufacturers   don't    separate expensive  PDP   panel ($2000  and  more)  and   $40 driver  IC  on   it. It  is easier  to  replace  a small $40 part  than  the  entire screen. So far  they  just  ignore   this  issue.   Future   plasma   panel  will  be  aluminum  + glass  + gas   only.(  no   more   drivers  on  it )    Other  common  problem  with  lines  on  screen   --  buffer   boards , high   ammount  of  failure   for  these  boards  due  to  poor   electronic  design
1-- voltage  needed  to  operate  controllers on  buffer   board  just   to  high  for  small   SMD IC
,2---  they  are   not   strong  enough  to  drive  address  electrode).  In   future  it  will  be   changed for  more  reliable  parts .

Other problems

Other problems: A plasma TV is  a  very  hard  working  device. It is working  harder than any TV  that  has been  built before, and as a  result - it produces a  lot of  heat. 75% of  technical problems  in  our shop on plasma TV's  are  caused by overheating   problems. If   there is no active cooling   system, most   of  them  die  in  the  first 3-6   years. Always   ask at   the   store before buying    if   there is a cooling   system   inside. No  cooling fans inside   = no  long    life. That is a major  rule   about plasma TV.   Just   some   advice from   real   experience: Company names that ignore   cooling system - PHILIPS,   DAEWOO, some  SONY models. A real   test   in shop -   PHILIPS   42 pf7220a/37.  After   10 hours  of  work   without cooling system, some of the  components on power supply  board  were  out of temperature  balance. Vs  voltage   changes up to  2 volts   plus   . This   may   lead  to   overheating    problem and  cause    other permanent   damages. How    long   will  it  last?    You   know.

Plasma without Cooling System

Power supply:          The   most   hard working   board in a plasma TV, it develops   voltage to supply   all   components, high current + high voltage. Input fuse is 10 A. Not   so many   TV's  in  TV  history   use  input  fuse - 10 A. Very sensitive   for   input   AC   voltage  and  output  DC   voltage. It  is  a  good   idea  to  check   your   electric   outlet   before   you  hook  up  YOUR   plasma. Perfect  electric   connections   are   the second major   rule   for  plasma. A  real  example – a   Sony   42"  plasma  was  in service  on sparking  electric plug  in  apartment.  The  result:  dead   power supply, wiped   EEPROM memory, and   a  repair  cost  of  $470. Save  your   money:
  ---don't   use   cheap   extension   cords,
   ---open   wires,
 ---  100-year-old  electric  outlets.
Keep in  mind  that  plasma  needs  twice  as  much  input  current  as  any  TV  on market.
   Common  power  supply problems:
-   hard   to turn  on,
-   stops   working   after a  while,
-   does  not   turn on at   all,
 -  flashing   pixels   on screen.

Logic control, X, Y sustain, buffer boards:       controls picture, fires the gas, and many others functions. Common problems include negative image, no image, vertical or horizontal stripes on picture, turns on and than turns off, and many more. Technically they are complitely new electronic devices, nothing before built to compare with.It is always better to relace both sustain boards on any models (on SONY,TOSHIBA,LG you must -  no choice).

  Care:
-   cooling system (if it's not installed by manufacturer)
-   good electric plugs
-   don't leave plasma on one channel for a long time (2-6 days)
-   magnetic fields does not affect on plasma screen like on older TV's
-   don't use plasma TV on the same electric line with   other   powerful units such    as
   vacuum,
   electric   motors,
   plasma   cutter ,
   welding   equipment.
 -   NO   ELECTRIC  GENERATORS  - ANY    TYPE    ANY   BRAND    (PLASMA        IS    TO    SENSITIVE  TO  INPUT  AC  VOLTAGE) !!!!

Major   brand   or "exotic"   brand   name?
Major  companies   build  their  own   product,  their   own  components, and  have  their  own  electronic  design. They  have  experienced  customer support.
     They drive electronic industry forward.
They spend money on a research.
They know what they doing.     "Exotic" companies  -  don't  (they do  copy  and   paste!!!!!!)

LCD  or  PLASMA?

Technically LCD.

-    no overheating problem
-    no burn in image problem
-    low electric bill
-    not too many hard working parts
-    proven technology
-    twice as light
